Brightline West train would serve downtown Los Angeles, Inland Empire

High-speed rail operators Brightline West think it’s time people stopped thinking about its project between Las Vegas and Southern California as a train to Victorville.

Greta Seidman, director of public affairs for Brightline, told a local tourism group on Tuesday that double routes from Victorville would eventually provide continuous train service to downtown Los Angeles or the Inland Empire. Trips from Southern California to Las Vegas would take around three hours with tickets competitively priced compared to the cost of a car or plane trip.

Brightline expects 11.3 million one-way train trips between Southern California and Las Vegas once the system is operational in four years.

“This route has been a lot over the years,” said Seidman, one of some 30 Las Vegas-based Brightline employees and a long-time resident who has seen various iterations of southbound train proposals. California over several decades.

But since Brightline bought what was once XpressWest in 2018, new plans have emerged for connectivity to Las Vegas’ largest tourist market.

Under the old XpressWest plan, company officials expected travelers to drive and park in Victorville, then take the train to Las Vegas. Eventually, a plan was drawn up to add more tracks west of Palmdale, California, where the California high-speed rail system would pass.

Under Brightline, the Palmdale connection was kept, but it also added a link to Rancho Cucamonga via Cajon Pass. Palmdale and Rancho Cucamonga are both cited as transit hubs that would connect travelers to Metrolink, Southern California’s suburban rail system.

In addition, Seidman said plans are underway to develop an underground passenger transportation system between the planned Rancho Cucamonga station and the Ontario International Airport through a familiar Las Vegans operation – the Boring Co.

Boring developed the $ 52.5 million three-stop Convention Center Loop transit system at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Seidman told the Destination Services Association Las Vegas, a group of more than 200 tourism companies, of the planned $ 8 billion rail service project that is slated to kick off next year.

Association president Shelley Stepanek said Seidman’s presentation was ideal for members to learn more about what the company has in store, but she still sees flaws in Brightline’s strategy, especially for travelers who would take the train from Las Vegas to Los Angeles.

“When he drops you off in LA, you still have to rent a car somewhere there,” Stepanek said.

“For those coming (from Southern California), they can ride the Strip by cab,” she said, noting that the attractions in Southern Nevada are close together while those in LA are very. scattered.

“And that’s also four or five years from now,” Stepanik said. “I think it was a good presentation because a lot of us didn’t know much about it. But for me, I don’t think I would.

Stepanik said she plans to do more research on Brightline when she makes one of her frequent trips to South Florida. Brightline currently operates between Miami and West Palm Beach via Fort Lauderdale and is building an extension in Orlando with plans to go west to Tampa.

Other details from Seidman’s presentation:

– Train service from Southern California would benefit Southern Nevada tourism as customers would likely stay two to three nights at a hotel or resort and come for a special event, such as a sporting event or a concert.

– Brightline officials expect to capture 22% of the traveler market share when fully operational. This would potentially take 3 million vehicles off the road over a one year period and remove 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the air as well as save about 3.3 billion gallons of gasoline.

– Brightline train customers will benefit from an onboard concierge service to make reservations en route, food and beverage service, free Wi-Fi and charging stations, luggage registered, class-of-service levels and state-of-the-art restrooms. Train cars will also be pets.

– The Brightline station in Las Vegas will have a Las Vegas Boulevard address and will be located between the Blue Diamond and Warm Springs roads. It should become a transportation hub so that train passengers can reach resort and attraction destinations.

– The project is expected to create 40,000 construction jobs and 1,000 permanent jobs, Seidman said.

– Each train would be able to carry 450 to 500 passengers at a time and could run with departures every 45 minutes.

– The all-electric train system would have power generation systems along the route, which would typically run in the median of Interstate 15 in Victorville.
