City of Las Vegas works with NTT to roll out the largest private network in the United States

LONDON & LAS VEGAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–NTT Ltd.a global leader in IT infrastructure and services, today announced a 5G Private Network Extension (P5G) for the City of Las Vegas (CoLV) at Mobile World Congress 2022 (MWC) in Las Vegas, Nevada. The project involves the deployment and provisioning of NTT’s P5G to build the largest private network in the United States.

The goal is for the network to serve as an open platform for local businesses, government and educational institutions to deploy innovative solutions that enrich the lives of Las Vegas citizens and visitors. NTT is working with partners to more than double the number of network access points (APs) across Las Vegas. Unlike most CBRS (Citizens Broadband Radio Spectrum) deployments, which are in buildings or industrial, this network extends across public spaces. It’s also the first network of its size to be open to third-party access points and end-user devices. This puts Las Vegas on the right path to becoming a technology hub for citizens and organizations within the city limits.

“The City of Las Vegas network will drive innovation and be a model for cities and businesses around the world. Once implemented, this will be the largest open municipal grid CBRS deployment in the United States,” said Shahid Ahmed, Group Executive Vice President New Ventures and Innovation at NTT Ltd. “With the support of NTT’s bespoke services, local organizations can use their own devices. and develop their applications on the network. Across the city, residents and visitors will benefit from improved connectivity, safety and security, as well as access to healthcare and other essential services. »

With its open and intelligent network, NTT can customize network services to meet the different requirements of existing and new applications, whether complete, edge or intelligent solutions. Some initial use cases include:

  • Education: improving connectivity and remote learning applications for students in the Clark County School District.
  • Security: intelligent surveillance systems, including motion detection cameras, in parks, event venues, congested traffic areas and other places in the city to help law enforcement.
  • Health care: better connectivity for residents means access to more services, such as telehealth.

The Municipality of the City of Las Vegas, its stakeholders, and the business community will benefit from the capabilities of a P5G network, including ultra-low latency, greater reliability, massive capacity, transparent security, and flexible management. As new use cases arise, the network will become a revenue-generating framework that can improve city results while supporting network maintenance, expansion, and improvement. This network model, along with the new services and applications launched in CoLV, can be replicated and marketed respectively in cities across the United States.

“Our goal is always to make the City of Las Vegas the best possible community for residents and visitors by improving education, workforce development and safety,” said Michael Sherwood, director of innovation for the city of Las Vegas. “To do this, we needed to expand our wireless capabilities and connectivity across the city and that’s why the City of Las Vegas chose to work with NTT. With its wide range of capabilities, NTT enables the city of Las Vegas to become an important technology hub and a solid economic base.

As a multi-party, multi-phase project leader for CoLV, NTT provides its P5G platform that encompasses LTE/5G network as a service that integrates security, control and privacy by design and enables companies and other customers to flexibly secure, size and segment their networks. P5G local area network (LAN) technology provider Celona is working with NTT on this project. One of Celona’s contributions is a software-defined operating model that can track key performance indicators for an open ecosystem of market-leading device and application vendors. “We are excited about our continued collaboration with NTT and the opportunity to deliver unique operational agility and efficiency to end users on the city of Las Vegas’ expanding P5G network,” said Rajeev Shah, Founder and CEO. of Celona.

Las Vegas started partnership with NTT in 2018 benefit NTT Smart Solutions to improve safety, situational awareness, traffic jams and contraflow driving in the city using sensors, IoT, big data and predictive analytics. In 2020, NTT and CoLV announced the expansion of the Accelerate the smart project to include smart park use cases in multiple locations, which has helped improve public safety and provide a better experience for citizens and visitors. NTT Smart Solutions has transformed Las Vegas into a true smart city and helped create a safer, more inclusive and sustainable environment. Deploying applications on an open network on top of P5G is a first in the market in terms of openness and scale. One of the first benefits for citizens after the rollout in the city is the expansion of NTT Smart Solutions into new parks that will continue to provide additional security and park services.
