LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man who lost both his legs in a DUI accident shared his story with 8 News Now on Thursday as he continues his long road to recovery.

“I was screaming ‘why me?'” recalls Riley McGowan. “Why did such a thing have to happen? »

McGowan shared the moment his life changed forever when he said a suspected DUI driver hit him.

“I heard a scream and a bang, and I looked up,” he said. “And the next thing I know, five feet in front of me, there’s an old Dodge Dakota.”

The 23-year-old was working in the Casino Center Blvd. median near US 95 when he said a drunk driver jumped off the curb, rammed his work truck and knocked it over.

“I remember trying to crawl away from the situation,” McGowan said.

Nearly two months and ten surgeries later, McGowan has lost both of his legs and he’s doing his best to navigate this new normal he never could have imagined.

“We never know what’s going to happen because of that,” he explained.

It’s been anything but easy, but McGowan hopes by sharing his story he can convince at least one person to think twice about getting behind the wheel while impaired.

“Whether it’s having an accident or causing an accident and hurting someone else,” McGowan said. “There are going to be consequences to your actions.”

As he focuses on restarting, he is grateful for this second chance.

“You never know when your last second will be,” he concluded. “And that became very true for me one day.”

McGowan and her family started a GoFundMe to help cover her medical bills.

The driver said police hit him and pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing significant bodily harm.

She also has two previous impaired driving charges and is expected to return to court for sentencing on September 29.
