Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas makes it easy for electric car owners. As of this month, 24 charging stations for electric vehicles are now available at the airport.

They are split equally between the Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 car parks. The project would have cost $250,000 to acquire and install the devices.

The installation was completed late last month,” said Joe Rajchel, an airport spokesman. “They are available to anyone using the valet service at no additional cost.”

This means airport passengers can get a fully charged battery on their flight home. Those who drive Tesla electric vehicles must have their adapters to charge a car at the airport, Rajchel further told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

In the future, the airport may add more electric vehicle chargers, Rajchel confirmed. They could be located in the long-term parking area.

More than 11,000 electric vehicles in Nevada

Interest in electric vehicles is growing, supporters report. There were 11,040 electric vehicles in Nevada last June. That’s according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

A few weeks ago, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak, D, pledged that at least 30 percent of all new trucks and buses sold in the state will be zero emissions by 2030. D by 2050, 100% will be zero emissions. The pledge is part of a multi-state agreement.

Proponents say switching to 100% will result in $7.5 billion in public health benefits, citing data from the American Lung Association. The move will also prevent 676 premature deaths, supporters add.

But skeptics say the cost of electric vehicles remains too high to be affordable for low- and middle-income Americans. In January, the average price of an electric vehicle in the United States was $62,876.

This amount represents more than 93% of the median US household income reported in 2020, jalponikan online publication covering the automotive sector, reported.

Impact on gas price

But proponents of electric vehicles say their popularity has grown with rising gas prices. The cost of a gallon of gas in the Las Vegas Valley is around $5 at many gas stations in the area, the Review-Journal mentioned.

Las Vegas airport was renamed in December in honor of former US Senator Harry Reid. He represented Nevada in the Senate between 1987 and 2017. Reid was also the Senate Majority Leader. He died later in December at the age of 82.

It was formerly called McCarran International Airport. It was to honor former US Senator Pat McCarran. He represented Nevada between 1933 and 1954. But officials opted to rename the airport after complaints emerged that McCarran was biased.
